Comme Hold On to Your Hats () d'Al Jolson, Banjo Eyes Ă©tait un Ă©vĂ©nement. La lĂ©gende de la comĂ©die musicale Eddie Cantor revenait pour la premiĂšre fois sur scĂšne Ă  Broadway depuis 1928, alors qu’il avait jouĂ© dans le musical Ă  succĂšs Whoopee! (). Comme le musical de Jolson, la prĂ©sence de Cantor promettait d’ĂȘtre un succĂšs, mais, comme Jolson, la santĂ© de Cantor (et peut-ĂȘtre le temps froid de New York) l’a forcĂ© Ă  quitter le musical et Ă  rentrer chez lui en Californie. Donc Banjo Eyes s'est arrĂȘtĂ© en moins de quatre mois.

Bien que Cantor Ă©tait connu sous le nom de "Banjo Eyes", le titre ne faisait pas rĂ©fĂ©rence Ă  son personnage mais Ă  un cheval de course parlant, jouĂ© en costume par l’équipe de vaudeville de Morton et Mayo.
