1976

Set on the crumbling stage of a Broadway theatre the musical brings together past performers from the Weismann's Follies as they reunite for one final time before the venue's destruction. Then in 2000 it staged a contemporary rewrite The Villain's Opera. Now they finally tackle the scattergun but powerful Brecht/Weill version, inspired by the same story, first premiered in 1928 in Berlin, at the same time that yet another brand-new rewrite of the original source material The Busker's Opera is being staged at London's Park Theatre.

Dernière : dimanche 30 août 2015
Metteur en scène : Rufus Norris
Chorégraphe : Javier De Frutos

Commentaire : One of the great primal, spiritual myths, Everyman asks whether it is only in death that we can understand our lives. A cornerstone of English drama since the 15th century, it now explodes onto the stage in a startling production with words by Carol Ann Duffy, Poet Laureate, and movement by Javier De Frutos.
BAFTA winner and Academy Award® nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) takes the title role in this dynamic new production of one of English drama’s oldest plays, directed by the National Theatre’s new Director Rufus Norris (Broken, London Road).
Presse : "It’s an admirable effort, with industrious, multi-tasking support from an ensemble of 22, but is it, finally, a play for today? It induces shivers as a memento mori, possesses a rare metaphysical curiosity too but the best plays today tend to have more to chew on." Dominic Cavendish for The Daily Telegraph
"... virtuosic production that captures both the frantic dizziness of a money-driven world and the beckoning finality of death." Michael Billington for The Guardian
"Foul-mouthed, moralistic, atheistic, theatrical; the first big production from the new regime at the Royal National Theatre grabs your attention but it is also a dumbed-down jumble." Quentin Letts for The Daily Mail
"As a vision of the battle between the soul and the world, Everyman isn’t revelatory. But as a statement of intent from Norris it’s bold." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

Presse : "At the end of this thrilling and merciless production you leave the theatre feeling both appalled and strangely elated – the sure sign that a tragedy has hit its mark." Charles Spencer for The Telegraph
"The play's tragic force emerges strongly and the production's climax seems better suited to modern tastes than Euripides's original." Michael Billington for The Guardian
"The heroine's formidability and vulnerability are brilliantly entwined in McCrory's performance." Paul Taylor for The Independent
"It’s McCrory’s performance that makes the production satisfyingly muscular. She captures Medea’s animal savagery and the agony of being transfixed by her own grim destiny." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard
"Here is an exciting, fashionable production of a horrid play." Quentin Letts for The Daily Mail

Presse : "There is much to admire but also moments that seem overblown and at times downright perverse." Charles Spencer for The Telegraph
"... the production is, for the most part, thrillingly well-played ... Strongly recommended." Paul Taylor for The Independent
"Mendes's production and Russell Beale's performance sharpen our understanding of Shakespeare's analysis of human folly and the primacy of contradictory feeling over calm rationality." Michael Billington for The Guardian
"Mr Russell Beale is rightly held in affection. But at 53 is he old enough to be a Lear? Can he create sufficient sense of royalty and command? Not for me, alas." Quentin Letts for The Daily Mail
"... the scenes of anguish, violence and despair are stunningly achieved." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

Presse : "Hytner's brilliantly acted (both leads are stunning), acutely penetrating and deeply disturbing account of the play." Paul Taylor for The Independent
"It’s a gripping production of a tragedy that is also an intensely painful psychological thriller, and though the production lasts more than three hours, it never loosens its dramatic hold. This Othello has all the hallmarks of Hytner at his best - it’s witty, agile, lucid and deeply felt...Any production of Othello stands or falls with the actors playing Othello and Iago, and the double-act between Lester’s Moor and Rory Kinnear’s Iago proves exceptional. " Charles Spencer for Daily Telegraph
"Everything about the production is clear, clever and comprehensible. But, partly because it denies Othello something of his musical grandeur and makes Iago's diseased mind the main event, I'd say it scores a successful victory on points without delivering the final, knockout blow." Michael Billington for The Guardian
"Though it lasts well over three hours, Sir Nicholas Hytner’s inventive Othello zips along." Quentin Letts for The Daily Mail
"Adrian Lester is a charismatic, dignified Othello... a reminder, as if we needed one, of his great quality as a Shakespearean actor. Rory Kinnear is mesmerising as Iago...The modern setting reveals the play’s paranoid mood and uncomfortable humour but muffles the tragedy a little. Still, this is a distinguished, lucid production. " Henry Hitchings for The Evening Stanadard

Jonathan Andre, Kwame Peter Crentsil, Sherinne Kayra Anderson, Thierry Picaut
Commentaire : The London staging began previews on November 6, 2010 with an opening night on November 16 and ran in repertoire with other National Theatre productions. There was a mixed reaction to this show: all agreed it had stunning choreography and a superb cast of singers and dancers, but for many its political message was lost in what was ultimately another “jukebox musical”. By avoiding an honest portrayal (in real life Fela had 27 wives and died of AIDS because of his refusal to use condoms) it was felt this was a whitewash and missed opportunity to create a serious and groundbreaking musical.
Presse : "Somehow Bill T Jones’s production proceeds in fits and starts without ever achieving a satisfying dramatic momentum. I longed for a stronger sense of narrative, and more depth beyond the showbiz razzle-dazzle" Charles Spencer for The Daily Telegraph
"It's a loud, brash, energetic spectacle...While musically impressive, the production could do with a stronger book. The story is flimsy and confused, and there's a lack of narrative drive." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard
"The best bits, for me, were those that make you feel on your pulses why Fela's music, with its sarcastic pidgin lyrics and obstinately insistent rhythms." Paul Taylor for The Independent
"It's a great story, and one told with enormous verve in Bill T Jones's kaleidoscopic production. The dancing is ecstatic, the music lifts the spirits, and the stage is alive with movement...I've never seen a show quite like it at the National. " Michael Billington for The Guardian

182) Hamlet

Presse : "Kinnear's fine Hamlet...Kinnear is a strong, clearly-defined Hamlet...Both for Kinnear's performance and the revelatory detail of the production, this is an evening to admire and cherish."
Michael Billington for The Guardian
"In Rory Kinnear the National Theatre has a stunning new Hamlet. From the moment we first see him he’s a captivating presence.."
Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard
"Rory Kinnear’s intelligent, dry-witted student prince...An intriguing production that prompts and probes like an interrogation in a bare room.
Neil Norman for The Daily Express
"[Rory Kinnear] towering performance...a chilling production that demands to be seen."
David Lister for The Independent
"With great modesty, Mr Kinnear makes this modern Hamlet his distinctive possession.
Quentin Letts for The Daily Mail
"Kinnear proves a Hamlet of great individuality and distinction."
Charles Spencer for The Daily Telegraph

181) Danton's Death

Presse : "This version thins the dramatic texture and turns the play into a character study: one in which the sensual, death-haunted, strangely passive Danton confronts the repressed, life-fearing, remorselessly active Robespierre. That is a vital part of Büchner's play; but to focus so exclusively on that element is to miss the larger point that they are also history's puppets."
Michael Billington for The Guardian
"Certain plays are easier to admire than to love. Danton’s Death (1835), written by Georg Büchner in a fit of revolutionary zeal when he was just 21, indubitably falls into this category."
Fiona Mountford for The Evening Standard
"Thrilling production...a truly gripping drama. "
Charles Spencer for The Daily Telegraph
"Visually arresting and viscerally involving production."
Mark Shenton for The Stage
"'Danton’s Death' is not uplifting or touching but it makes for an interesting, admirably serious evening."
Quentin Letts for The Daily Mail

Commentaire : Dance sequences and acrobatic displays were interpolated into this production as a means of depicting the torture scenes. For several critics this was felt to be self-consciously “arty” and embarrassing. The political message of the work still made an impact, but 30 years on, some found that impact diminished.

CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "It is one of the most powerfully moving and imaginative productions of the year, whatever age you happen to be." ALASTAIR MACAULAY for THE FINANCIAL TIMES says, "Rory Kinnear gives a star performance in a star role." RHODA KOENIG for THE INDEPENDENT says, "Superficially heartless comedy." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Hytner has created a coherent and persuasive modern equivalent of Restoration high society, and as a result the old comedy sparkles and shocks anew...this is a production that memorably captures both the laughter and the biting chill factor of Etherege's cruel comedy." Presse : FIONA MOUNTFORD for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "a Christmas cracker...busy from the start with novel-compressing short, sharp bursts of action on an ever-moving revolve, attains transcendence." ALASTAIR MACAULAY for THE FINANCIAL TIMES says, "There are many good things in Helen Edmundson’s adaptation...At every point, the story is clear and often gripping." LYN GARDNER for THE GUARDIAN says, "Beautifully acted by a large cast, and exquisitely sung by a choir, this is a deeply satisfying evening that celebrates parent-child love and reminds us that our children do not belong to us, they belong only to themselves." SUSAN ELKIN for THE STAGE says, "This arresting, sumptuous, fast-moving production is one of the most powerful pieces of theatre I’ve seen in a long time. I cried, laughed and gasped - sometimes within a single minute." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Just as special, just as moving, the second time around...Melly Still directs a beautifully fluent and uncluttered production that handles the complex narrative with clarity and panache...This is not a show for the excessively squeamish, or children under 12, but I suspect almost everyone else will be bowled over by its power and humanity." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Engrossing...bold, robust and never the least prurient or morbid."

Presse : PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "Fresh, inventively funny production." KATE BASSETT also for THE INDEPENDENT says, "This is not Hytner's most successful modernisation. It often feels mildly strained, lacks real bite and is not quite thought through, actually missing a few tricks." NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "The modern-dress performances brim with vitality. Jennings's estuary-accented wide boy Subtle sets the deceptions going in a comedy classic performance...Russell Beale delights and deftly bridges class divides thanks to speedy costume changes." SUSANNAH CLAPP for OBSERVER says, "Nicholas Hytner has gone for gold. And got it. There never was much doubt that his production of The Alchemist would be full of fine moments: a cast headed by Alex Jennings, Lesley Manville and Simon Russell Beale more or less guaranteed that. It was less predictable that Ben Jonson's play about 17th-century con-artists would present so juicy and precise a portrait of 21st-century metropolitan life." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "Fine and hilarious...This, for my money, is one of the funniest plays in the English language." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "A fresh and superbly inventive production...Rarely have I seen an apparently dusty classic given such an exhilarating modern makeover." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Russell Beale and Jennings... there is no funnier or more adroit double-act on the London stage...The evening is irresistible."

Presse : PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "Highly engaging." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "Stunning." ALASTAIR MACAULAY for THE FINANCIAL TIMES says, "It runs with much of the zip and colour of a good musical and, amid the huge cast, there is a wealth of first-rate acting." NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Dramatically inert." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "An ensemble production of dazzling flair and comic vitality." SAM MARLOWE for THE TIMES says, "It’s the most fun I’ve had at the theatre in ages...It’s bold, brash, and fabulous"

Presse : NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "A spectacular theatrical epic." PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "Old-fashioned in stage-craft and style." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "While the play was a startling antidote to 60s naturalism, what now seems more interesting is Shaffer's understanding of the imperialist instinct in which the conquest of the Incas becomes a metaphor for modern Iraq." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Lumbering production by Trevor Nunn, full of empty displays of ritual, dodgy choreography and naff mime sequences" BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "There’s much to admire in Nunn’s use of a bare, round, wooden stage with plenty of gorgeous costumes but a minimum of props."

Presse : NICK CURTIS for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Once in a Lifetime is not very funny or very sharp, and director Edward Hall tries to paper over its deficiencies by throwing expensive sets..." PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "At the end, I felt as exhausted by the struggle to have a good time as the game cast must be by the strain of trying to provide one." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Dizzily enjoyable revival." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "Has a certain period charm." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "There’s no faulting the energy of Hall’s cast or the exotic excellence of Mark Thompson’s designs... I just wasn’t convinced that Once in a Lifetime was worth the effort." ALISTAIR SMITH for THE STAGE says, "It falls down due to a lack of substance and fails to create anything truly memorable. Like its source material it is just a bit too frothy."

Presse : CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Helen Edmundson's adaptation does full justice to the dark power of the original, while also transforming it into a thrilling piece of theatre...This is an emotionally overwhelming production, and one that will haunt the memory of all who see it." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Wonderfully abundant, munificent version of Jamila Gavin’s Whitbread-winning novel." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "A highly superior show that should appeal to adults and children alike."

Presse : NICK CURTIS for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "David Edgar's new play is an uncannily timely but thorny work that takes some struggling through." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "While I admire Edgar's desire to explore big issues on public stages and to instruct delightfully, I can't help feeling his new play offers somewhat tendentious explanations for the failure of multi-cultural policies...In short, Edgar's play doesn't quite add up and overlooks the many other sources of racial tension in Britain. But at least it occupies the Olivier stage with a certain bravura in Michael Attenborough's production." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "What [David Edgar] hasn't been able to achieve is a satisfying drama. He hits all the right topical buttons, but for long arid stretches the play resolutely refuses to come to life...There are ideas in abundance, so much clever talk...But of real human drama, and characters you genuinely come to care for, there is little evidence." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Intelligent, balanced and fair...A 23-person cast that includes Oliver Ford Davies as an educated demagogue and David Troughton as the council’s genially floundering leader, is as committed as any cast could be. They left me stimulated and impressed. But excited? Not quite." KATE BASSETT for THE INDEPENDENT says, "Hardly sparks into life at all...hasn't successfully digested and transformed all his material into an engaging drama...this is a peculiarly arid, grey and sprawling piece with too many wooden exchanges and repetitive sections that patently need redrafting. "

Presse : NICK CURTIS for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Never quite clever or funny enough.....Farr's production has good supporting performances, deals with the dual-language problem with admirable simplicity, and has a sting in its tail. But I'm not sure, for all its sly contemporary references, that it has any more to say to us than Gogol's original." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "There are also good things in Farr's production: not least Ti Green's set filled with a baroque imperialist nostalgia. But Farr's play veers awkwardly between a paraphrase of Gogol's original and a satire on east European capitalist chaos. In the end, it feels neither one thing nor the other and leaves one hungrily waiting for Gogol." IAN JOHNS for THE TIMES says, "Sheen is superb as a self-aggrandising fantasist...But the play often drifts between riffing on Gogol and satirising post-Soviet capitalism and dilutes each’s social sting."

CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, Superb new production in the Olivier...captures both the epic scale of this dramatic diptych.." Presse : BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Refreshingly ambitious.....But the trilogy has its longueurs, its dips of energy, its relentlessly protracted arguments." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Excellent in parts but less than Utopian." PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "Stoppard's magnificent spectacle - just the five hours too long." ALASTAIR MACAULAY for THE FINANCIAL TIMES says, "I find this trilogy beautiful....The meanings of the play cohere as you watch, not as narrative but as poetry, and keep growing in recollection." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GIUARDIAN says, "It opens up the subject of revolution while being politically partial. And it contains passages of breathtaking beauty and surprising ordinariness." NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Nothing of such intellectual ambition, such daring or epic scope has marked the National Theatre's thirty-eight year history as this brain-storm trilogy of plays by Tom Stoppard." JOHN THAXTER for THE STAGE says, "Stoppard's three plays lack a simple narrative drive and it seems likely that only Voyage, the most Chekhovian, will enjoy regular revivals."

Metteur en scène : Trevor Nunn
Chorégraphe : Matthew Bourne
Avec : Lauren Kennedy (Nellie Forbush), Philip Quast (Emile), Edward Baker-Duly (Lt. Cable), Sheila Francisco (Bloody Mary) , Nick Holder (Luther).
Commentaire : This major revival at the National Theatre interpolated two songs that had been cut from the original production: “My Girl Back Home” and “The Time is Now”. It was staged with some grainy newsreel projections, and there was an attempt at “gritty realism” by ensuring the crew of GIs were tubby, sweaty and a long way from the usual dancing chorus boys. There was the usual criticism that taxpayers’ money should not be used to subsidise commercial musicals at the National Theatre, but it was generally agreed this was an excellent production of a now slightly dated show.
Presse : BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, “South Pacific at the National is almost an enchanted evening.”
CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, “The show may not be in the same league as the National's earlier musical hits, but at its best, as the song says, it offers some enchanted evening.”
MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, “Decently dull production.” He goes on to say, “An evening that dutifully delivers a musical classic but only briefly acquires a touch of ecstasy.”
RHODA KOENIG for THE INDEPENDENT says, “A fabulous cast includes Lauren Kennedy as a wonderfully brassy-tender Nellie, Edward Baker-Duly as the clean-cut, anguished Lieutenant, Nick Holder as a flabby, fast-talking small-time Sergeant Bilko, and the fine John Shrapnel as the humane but comically exasperated Commander of the island.”
NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, “Glamour-laden, beautifully drilled production.”
MICHAEL COVENEY for THE DAILY MAIL said, “Nunn's revival, magically designed by John Napier with exquisite lighting by David Hersey, is every bit as good as the RNT's previous Rodgers and Hammersteins, Carousel and Oklahoma!”
SHERIDAN MORLEY for TELETEXT says the production is , "fatally unsexy" and "underpowered". He goes on to say, "It is also bloodless, overlong and lacks any narrative drive."

Presse : JANE EDWARDES for TIME OUT says,"Hytner has proved, once again, that he knows how to tame the National's arena stage." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "There are a few good moments in this production at the National's Olivier, but many more that are either mediocre or downright disgraceful. It is a shock to discover that Hytner - a director I have always admired - is capable of such crass vulgarity."BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "A decidedly uneven affair: fine Leontes, strangely underpowered Hermione, and modern dress that adds a bit but, in one major instance, subtracts lots." MICHAEL BILLINGTON says, "By opting for modern dress, Hytner...anchors Leontes's jealousy in a plausible world of tortured politesse, and provides a perfect setting for a major performance from Alex Jennings as Leontes." PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says,Hytner's production is at its best when giving us a sharp, fresh sense of the ethos that helps explain Leontes' sudden descent into madness." BEN DOWELL for THE STAGE says, "Modern take is full of wonder." NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Even though Hytner's modernising touches are shrewd, his production disappoints."

> Olivier (23/2 - 4/4/2001) 20 représ devant 19.178 spect
Presse : THE GUARDIAN describes the production as "Fluid and inventive." THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Ravishing is the word for it. Marcel Proust's vast novel, his reminiscence of childhood, love and desire in high French society, has been triumphantly compressed, distilled and transmuted for performance on stage." THE STAGE says, "It is the general atmosphere, conveyed on a largely empty stage, which is the main achievement of Trevis' production." THE STAGE goes on to say, "Of necessity the acting style has to be direct, and most of the cast accomplish it." THE SUNDAY TIMES describes the play as "a thrilling suprise". SHERIDAN MORLEY for TELETEXT says, "This is a child's guide to Proust and an epic social history of 20th-century France. A great National achievement." TIME OUT says, "Sebastian Harcombe brings a languid touch to the character of Marcel, but elsewhere the acting is often crude." THE TIMES says, "It pains me to say that the play falls shorter of those unscalable Proustian peaks than the film script...." THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Journey from page to stage leaves Proust and Pinter's Remembrance sadly forgettable." THE INDEPENDENT says, "Unfortunately, Trevis's production is awash with instantly forgettable moments and at some points, it's also excruciatingly clumsy."

Commentaire : HOUSE and GARDEN (1999)
two linked plays by Alan Avckbourn
The London premieres of two new connected Alan Ayckbourn plays which are performed in the olivier and Lyttelton simultaneously. The same actors appear in both productions, one of which is set in the interior of a house while the other is set outside. However, the plays can be seen as individual comedies!
Presse : THE INDEPENDENT says, "You don't need to be the fortune-teller at the climactic fete to predict that the National have a nice, safe middlebrow summer hit." THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, " Some of his (Alan Ayckbourn) finest, and deepest comedy." ROBERT GORE-LANGTON for THE DAILY EXPRESS says, "The Weakness of this production is that it's so unbalanced. House is a vintage comedy while Garden is anything but....Still, taken together this is an undeniably larky summer event." THE GUARDIAN says, "It is not just a triumph of theatrical logistics: Ayckbourn has important things to say about the moral mayhem of life." THE TIMES says, "The Ingenuity is even greater than in his tripartite Norman Conquests 30 years ago." NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD gave the show a luke-warm response saying, "Once exposed to the comedic pleasures of House and Garden, you see there's much less to the spectacular novelties than first meets the interested eye." JOHN PETER for THE SUNDAY TIMES says, "Haig gives one of the best performances of his career" He goes on to say, "Of the two plays, Garden is the weaker....Garden is noticeably more incomplete: things happen for no apparent reason, as if some necessary explanation had been withheld." PETER HEPPLE for THE STAGE says, As they share the same plot, it is not strictly necessary to see both, though the rewards are greater, in other words the second play is all the better for having seen the first." JANE EDWARDES for TIME OUT says, "If you were only to see one play, enter the 'House' alone; if you were to see both, visit the 'Garden' first."

Commentaire : This was a visiting production from the West Yorkshire Playhouse, notable for the use of three screens and computer graphics for some of the filmed sequences, for the well-handled “rain” sequence, but, above all, for the much-praised choreography by Stephen Mear. The production returned to play the Christmas season at the Olivier with the same principal cast.

Presse : DOMINIC CAVENDISH of TIME OUT says, "Some of the sentiments behind 'Money' may have depreciated in value over the years, but this production valiantly proves its enduring comic richness." PETER HEPPLE of THE STAGE says, "The satire may be fairly obvious but it is elegantly carried out. However, its chief joy is the excellence of the acting, with Simon Russell Beale giving another fine performance as Alfred." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE of THE TIMES says, "Fine cast outshines an old tale."
Presse : CHARLES SPENCER of THE DAILY TELEGRAPH loved the show saying, "THIS may not be the best of all possible worlds but during the National's new production of Candide, you often believe you are watching the best of all possible musicals."
ALASTAIR MACAULEY of THE FINANCIL TIMES says, "It has a few faults and blips. Yet all the energies of those involved carry it, entertainingly and touchingly, along its long journey, until it arrives at a rich blend of wisdom and innocence that is as rare in the theatre as it is in life."
JOHN PETER of THE SUNDAY TIMES says, "This is a tremendous production: it is bursting with energy, intelligence, and sheer infectious pleasure of creative spirit."
BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE of THE TIMES says " A pacey, picaresque story needs a narrator, and gets a fine one from Simon Russell Beale, who saunters the stage informing us of devastating evils in cool, incisive style."
However, NICOLAS DE JONGH of THE EVENING STANDARD was more cool about the show, saying "The slant of Caird's distinctly winsome production and the music and songs leave me only medium-warm in appreciation of this fifties cult musical."

Avec : Maureen Lipman (Aunt Eller), Hugh Jackman (Curly), Josefina Gabrielle (Laurey), Jimmy Johnston (Will Parker), Vicki Simon (Ado Annie), Shuler Hensley (Jud Fry), Peter Polycarpou (AH Hakim), Gavin Lee
Presse : MICHAEL COVENEY of THE DAILY MAIL says "A truly great evening."
BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE of THE TIMES says, "Has there ever been a higher standard of dance in any subsidised theatre? No."
CHARLES SPENCER of THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says "The National has a huge hit on its hands."
MICHAEL COVENEY of THE DAILY MAIL says "A truly great evening, easily the equal of Guys and Dolls and Carousel. Enjoy."
NICOLAS DE JONGH of THE EVENING STANDARD was more luke-warm saying " A rich feast of dream-pie, but not my kind of meal".

JOHN THAXTER of THE STAGE describes McKellen as playing his part "with frenzied intensity." NICHOLAS DE JONGH found the play enjoyable but was not pleased with Sir Ian McKellen's performance commenting that it was "perhaps the worst of his brilliant career." This I cannot agree with myself, as I found his performance superb and touching. JOHN PETER of THE SUNDAY TIMES agrees saying McKellen's performance was "one of the greatest in his career" and BILL HAGERTY of THE NEWS OF THE WORLD says he "contributes a masterly performance" and goes on to say "It's a play with razor-sharp teeth."

The Olivier theatre has been converted into the round for this production
Presse : NICHOLAS de JONGH in the EVENING STANDARD , does not agree with me on the acting, he says " The actors miss the cutting but controlled Brechtian tone - Jeffery Kissoon's florid narrator for example. Miss Stevenson's Grusha is hopelessly well bred..." CHARLES SPENCER in the DAILY TELEGRAPH review wasn't too impressed either, he says "....a depressingly unfunny gallery of grotesques and a tiresomely florid narrator (Jeffery Kissoon)...Grusha is a one-dimensional character....", but IRVING WARDLE in the THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH says "Stevenson's Grusha....thrilling." and BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE in the TIMES review say "...Although her Grusha gets less gormless-looking as the evening bangs along, she never loses an underfed, pinched look..."
