1976

Avec : Roger Allam, Chris Anderson, Sue Appleby, Joe Armstrong, Joe Evans, Nick Harris, Harry Hepple, Barbara Marten, Nicola May-Taylor, Jules Melvin, Justine Mitchell, Sally Rogers, Sam Troughton and Anjana Vasan.
Commentaire : Roger Allam (Les Misérables, The Thick of It) returns to the National for the first time in a decade to play Rutherford in this new production directed by Polly Findlay (Beginning).
Githa Sowerby’s astonishing play was inspired by her own experience of growing up in a family-run factory in Gateshead. Writing in 1912, when female voices were seldom heard on British stages, she now claims her place alongside Ibsen and Bernard Shaw with this searing depiction of class, gender and generational warfare.
This Edwardian classic and powerful drama is on a par with the work of Ibsen, Gorky and Granville Barker. It enjoyed huge success in London and New York, and was hailed as 'a remarkable play'.
Presse : ★★★★ The entire cast is superb. Roger Allam gives a performance of understated intensity.
Evening Standard
★★★★ Inspiring. A timely, memorable revival.
The Times
★★★★ Atmospheric and powerful. Finally given the blockbuster production it always deserved.
Time Out
★★★★ Roger Allam is magnificent
Guardian
★★★★ Compelling. Magnificent performances.

Commentaire : Sean O’Casey’s great epic drama, The Plough and the Stars, caused riots when it opened at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin in 1926, ten years after the 1916 Easter Rising…
Presse : "Sean O’Casey’s 1926 play keeps a remarkably chipper tone, before descending into predictable tragedy. Sadly, when the blows come, they fail to move much; when all that’s gone before is strained humour and crude stereotypes, it’s hard to care much for this Dublin family and neighbours." Holly Williams for the Independent
"From a slowish start the drama gathers in intensity to a final act of harrowing brilliance." Jane Shilling for The Telegraph
"The women are exceptionally strong in this production of O’Casey’s great Easter Rising drama, which draws out the complex humanity of its characters." Michael Billington for The Guardian
"The play is an ensemble piece, and every character has a moment in the spotlight. But some of the droll minor ones seem caricatures, and the drama takes too long to exert its grip. Still, Judith Roddy impresses as energetic Nora, desperate for her new husband Jack not to take part in the uprising." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

203) Deep Blue Sea (The)
Type : Revival
Joué durant 2 mois 1 semaine

Avec : Helen McCrory (Hester), James Alper, Marion Bailey, Katy Brittain, Tom Burke, Hubert Burton, Adetomiwa Edun, Elsie Fallon, Nick Figgis, Nick Fletcher, Yolanda Kettle, Andrew Lewis, Sally Oliver, Peter Sullivan
Presse : "On the play’s release in 1952, the Observer’s critic showed a warped sense of judgment when he declared that all Hester needed was a good slap. At the end of this open-hearted production, I wanted to give her (and indeed all of the cast) a reassuring hug." Ben Lawrence for The Telegraph
"Because the production is so good, I resented even more Peter Rice’s sound design, which, with its thundery rumbles and earth-shaking vibrations, suggested that this London rooming house was not so much occupied by Freddie Page as about to be menaced by Freddy from A Nightmare on Elm Street." Mark Lawson for The Guardian
"Helen McCrory is achingly good in this sombre, tense revival of one of Terence Rattigan’s finest plays... McCrory delivers one of the performances of the year. Rigorous and poised, she makes Hester fragile and big-hearted, wry and wise but in the end a vortex of irrepressible desire." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard
"Rattigan’s portrait of a self-destructive sexual yearning that cannot be properly realised has resonances with his own secluded, secret sexual life. But here it also has an indisputable power of its own in this mesmerising story of human failing and McCrory provides a revelatory performance marred only by the occasional slip when first night jitters caused the cast to run over each other's lines a couple of times." Ben Dowell for Radio Times

"Drop-dead brilliant. A near perfect production." Daily Express
"Dominic Cooke’s excellent revival. August Wilson's blues still electrify in this landmark play" Guardian

199) Here We Go

Première : vendredi 27 novembre 2015
Dernière : samedi 19 décembre 2015
Metteur en scène : Dominic Cooke
Avec : Susan Engel, Patrick Godfrey, Hazel Holder, Joshua James, Amanda Lawrence, Eleanor Matsuura, Alan Williams
Presse : "I would describe it as a complete stinker but that sends us on a false scent, because this short play about death is entirely odourless and colourless, theatre’s answer to carbon monoxide; though only 45 minutes long, its sheer tedium left me gasping to be let out of the Lyttelton." Dominic Cavendish for The Telegraph
"Dominic Cooke directs with great care, Vicki Mortimer’s design is austerely effective and Godfrey faces death and the deprivations of old age unflinchingly." Micheal Billington for The Guardian
"As a practical joke on London’s bien pensants, it is a hoot. Trendy chinstrokers will rush along to worship political Miss Churchill’s latest masterpiece and will have to sit there, smiles of self-adornment slowly cracking as it dawns on them they’ve just been had." Quentin Letts for The Daily Mail
"The last 15 minutes are wordless; I don’t think I’ve ever sat through such an extended period of silence in a drama before...Inevitably, some will carp, but I was mesmerised." Fiona Mountford for The Evening Standard

Avec : Benji Bower, Will Bower, Craig Edwards, Felix Hayes, Phil King, Melanie Marshall, Simone Saunders, Maggie Tagney, Madeleine Worrall
Presse : "The whole is done, under Cookson’s direction, with great elan. But if I couldn’t join in the final cheers, it is because this kind of hectic abridgement offers a demonstration of theatrical skill rather than the moving accumulation of detail you get in great fiction." Michael Billington for The Guardian
"This is a production full of intelligent detail...Original, engaging and unexpectedly funny, it slightly overdoes the emotional restraint: Worrall’s Jane is admirably feisty, though less assured in tender moments." Jane Shilling for The Telegraph
"This intelligent, exhilaratingly theatrical response is like seeing an old friend and seeing them afresh." Sarah Hemming for The Financial Times

Commentaire : Sera transféré au Haymarket Theatre dès septembre 2014
Presse : "Directed with terrific niftiness by Nicholas Hytner, the play weaves between politically incorrect humour and something darker and more troubling as it raised awkward questions about the divisions between honourable and disgusting journalistic muck-raking. It suggests that, while a great many of our institutions may be found wanting at the moment, the NT is on exhilarating and exemplary form." Paul Taylor for The Independent
"Maybe it's too much to expect Bean to map out a path for the future. But what he has done is to remind us of the sins of the powerful and put an array of scandals on to the National Theatre stage. I mean it as a compliment when I say his play has a tabloid energy and bravura." Michael Billington for The Guardian
"Some terrific acting work across the board and slick direction from Nicholas Hytner keep it motoring along. It’s only in the darker second half, though, when despite Bean’s constant heavy-handed editorialising, the parallel real-life tragedies lurking behind the cartoon knock-about make themselves felt, that the show stops looking like a bold, topical summer filler, and becomes required, conscience-pricking viewing." Dominic Cavendish for The Daily Telegraph
"The Royal National Theatre’s quick-response play about the hacking scandal is less anti-Press than one might have expected. It is more ‘Drop the Dead Donkey’ than ‘J’accuse’. The heaviness of the humour obscures much of the seriousness." Quentin Letts for The Daily Mail
"Bean’s satire is deliberately grotesque. The cartoonish elements are richly enjoyable, laced with political incorrectness, yet they’re interleaved with some altogether more subtle jokes. Even if the show feels a little too broad and could do with a trim, it’s barbed, dense and very funny." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

Commentaire : Award-winning writer Alan Bennett is reunited with director Nicholas Hytner and Olivier Award-winning actress Frances de la Tour, with whom he worked on The History Boys and The Habit of Art.
Alan Bennett is one of Britain’s most celebrated playwrights, and the much anticipated People is the sixth of his plays to have its premiere at the National Theatre. Following its original run at the National Theatre, The History Boys transferred to Broadway, winning the Tony Award for Best Play in 2006, and toured internationally before being turned into a film, again directed by Nicholas Hytner and with a cast including Frances de la Tour.
Bennett and Hytner also collaborated on the award-winning play and film The Madness of King George and their last stage production, The Habit of Art, was broadcast as part of National Theatre Live in 2010.
Presse : "Mordantly funny new play...while the play has one or two awkward contrivances, it confirms Bennett's peculiar gift for blending the satiric and the elegiac. " Michael Billington for The Guardian
"Bennett’s writing brims with ideas — perhaps too many. Several of the characters are underdeveloped, and I’m not absolutely convinced that he has decided what this play’s main concern is. Yet it has bite..." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard
"People has a good theme but the production doesn’t half plod in places." Quentin Letts for The Daily Mail
"People is maybe not the most even-handed of plays but it demonstrates that, in his 78th year, Alan Bennett's acute wit and talent for challenging cosy English complacencies are in a very healthy state of preservation." Paul Taylor for The Independent
"At 78, Alan Bennett has lost little of his mischievous wit and sense of the ridiculous. His eagerly awaited new comedy, People, may not be out of the top drawer of his work, lacking the emotional depth and sly subtlety of his best writing, but it is entertaining, funny and touching...This may not be Bennett at the very top of his game, but it is still a richly enjoyable evening. Type : Original
Joué durant 6 mois
Première preview : jeudi 05 novembre 2009
Première : mardi 17 novembre 2009
Dernière : mercredi 19 mai 2010
Metteur en scène : Nicholas Hytner
Avec : Richard Griffiths (W H Auden), Alex Jennings (Benjamin Britten), Frances de la Tour, Danny Burns, Martin Chamberlain, Philip Childs, John Heffernan, Barbara Kirby, Elliot Levey, Adrian Scarborough, Stephen Wight, Tom Attwood, Laurence Belcher, Otto Farrant, Toby Graham.
Commentaire : The Habit of Art is a 2009 play by English playwright Alan Bennett, which centers on a fictional meeting between W. H. Auden and Benjamin Britten while Britten is composing the opera “Death in Venice”. The play has been described as a multi-layered postmodern masterpiece, describing the meeting between poet W.H. Auden (Richard Griffiths) and composer Benjamin Britten (Alex Jennings) in 1972, some 30 years after the failure of the opera they wrote together. But the play is not just about this meeting… it is a rehearsal of the play, so includes the stage manager (Frances de la Tour) who steps in occasionally to read the part for an absent actor, the writer, who must field complaints about his play, and even a casual walk on from another play being performed elsewhere in the theatre complex.
Presse : "Nicholas Hytner directs with an unerring instinct for the volatile nature of the material in a cracking production that flirtatiously keeps the audience up to speed with the outrageous amount of information and allusion." Paul Taylor for The Independent
"Absolute cracker, often wonderfully and sometimes filthily funny (this is not a show for the prudish), but also deeply and unexpectedly moving." Charles Spencer for The Daily Telegraph
"Satirical, serious and self-indulgent, sometimes all at the same time." Quentin Letts for The Daily Mail
"The play has the characteristic Bennett mix of wit and wistfulness...A play that could easily seem tricksy is also given a superbly fluid production by Nicholas Hytner and is beautifully acted." Michael Billington for The Guardian
"So much of The Habit of Art is so engaging, it seems churlish to point out its basic problem: which is that even the excellence of Richard Griffiths and Alex Jennings can’t stop one feeling that Bennett doesn’t fully trust his material. He isn’t confident that his portraiture can sustain a full-length play...the play lacks dramatic tension." Benedict Nightingale for The Times
"It’s funny, and sometimes brilliantly so, but strangely uninvolving. Although Bennett savours his material, he doesn’t make it sing." Henry Hitchings' for The Evening Standard

Presse : NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "A dreadful form of directorial embellishment." SARAH HEMING for THE FINANCIAL TIMES says, "Witty, super-slick staging." ALICE JONES for THE INDEPENDENT says, "Felt just like an art installation - slick, chilly and a little shallow." MICHAEL BILLINGTON says, "Much as I admire Crimp's text, I'm not sure it is helped by Katie Mitchell's hi-tech revival, which has strong echoes of her recent version of Virginia Woolf's Waves." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Mitchell’s cast kept me absorbed and alert." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Theatre needs to do more than intrigue: it needs to move and involve us, and those are qualities beyond Crimp's grasp."

Presse : NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, “Overpitched production…her [Fiona Shaw] Winnie struck me as a crudely comic, patronising send-up of a character, who ought to inspire bleak amusement. I was left untouched and unmoved…” MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, “A brilliant naturalistic performance conceived very much in terms of Shaw's own stage persona… Shaw is a fine Winnie.” PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, “It's arguable… that this Winnie is too archly aware of the audience and that this diminishes our sense of her terrible loneliness.” CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, “a knockout production… Brilliantly acted by Shaw, it is a staging that superbly captures that combination of wild laughter and existential terror that is the hallmark of all Beckett's greatest work.” ALEKS SIERZ for THE STAGE says, “An extraordinary production… You’d expect a bravura performance from Shaw and that’s exactly what you get.” BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, “Memorable performance in an awesome play.”

Presse : NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Feverish, flamboyant staging." ALASTAIR MACAULAY for THE FINANCIAL TIMES says, "It’s all dully interesting and admirably flat...One watches this Therese Raquin as if from an immense distance, and with total detachment." RHODA KOENIG for THE INDEPENDENT says, "The impression is of a story so adapted to contemporary, local taste that its odd, disturbing flavour has been adapted out of it. This Therese Raquin is easy to swallow, but an hour later you're hungry for a real play. MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "The play, in short, is nothing like as powerful as the novel." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "I suspect that Zola's original novel will haunt my memory far more potently than this disappointingly pallid and laborious stage version." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "A play that, far from being the scientific case-study Zola wanted, is as grimly moral a warning against extramarital hanky-panky as any ever written."

Chorégraphe : Hope Clarke
Avec : Tonya Pinkins {Caroline Thibodeaux), Greg Bernstein/Perry Millward/Jonny Weldon (Noah), Anna Francolini (Rose Gellman), Clive Rowe, Ian Lavender, Richard Henders, Hilton McRae Valda Avicks
Commentaire : This through-composed musical, combining spirituals, blues, Motown , classical music and Jewish Klezmer, began off-Broadway in November 2003, and received a Broadway production from May 2004 running for 126 performances. In spite of its very short run, it received six Tony Award nominations. The London production at the National Theatre did not achieve its hoped-for West End transfer, but it did win the Olivier Award for Best New Musical. (Tony Kushner was better known as the author of the AIDS play “Angels in America” )
Presse : NICOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Caroline, Or Change turns out, therefore, to be a quaintly charming musical, beautifully acted...Unfortunately Kushner's almost non-stop lyrics, whose words too often become submerged by the 10-strong orchestra, are embarrassingly inept, banal and rambling." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "A remarkable musical...the real joy lies in finding a musical that combines compassion with social awareness." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Amazing piece of music-theatre...Kushner's great achievement is to make the political personal in a work that combines great dramatic intensity with wild flights of fantasy and music of thrilling variety and strength...Tonya Pinkins is simply sensational in the title role" BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Tesori’s score, which embraces Afro-American and Jewish music, rock and blues and gospel, does help to give the evening the size and significance it’s in danger of lacking." ALEKS SIERZ for THE STAGE says, "Enjoyable to watch and highly emotional." PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "The staging by George C Wolfe is a pictorial joy. Caroline, or Change makes a delightful change from the usual no-brainer musical."

Presse : NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Anyone who comes fresh to the play should be warned they are not seeing some radical reinterpretation, but a pallid version of the real thing...Mitchell's Seagull does, though, generate an intriguing, desolate atmosphere." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "This is an evening where acting takes second place to effect and the sight of a decaying class tangoing its way to oblivion. It is director's theatre at its most indulgent in which the play, as Chekhov wrote it, is definitely not the thing." DOMENIC CAVENDISH for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "One of the most insightful Chekhov interpreters of her generation with a daringly dark and stripped-back Seagull." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "The period is somewhat confusingly updated to the 1920s...the main problem is an excess of atmospherics and detail...One should feel their pain at the end. I didn’t." ALASTAIR MACAULAY for THE FINANCIAL TIMES says, "It’s clever, it’s elegant, it’s interesting – and so what if it isn’t the least bit moving? Or if it isn’t the play Chekhov wrote?"

Presse : NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Despite the play's thematic flaws, Leigh and his superb players know just how to keep an audience tantalisingly hooked." BEN RUSSELL for THE INDEPENDENT says, " A good, but slightly pedestrian play that lacks the layered richness of Leigh's finest stage and film drama." MICHAEL BILINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "Funny-sad exploration of the inherent tensions of family life and the nature of the world around us...This is a passionate, funny, moving and well-observed play." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "It is absolutely terrific, at times as screamingly funny as Abigail's Party, at others as painfully touching and true such superb Leigh films as Secrets and Lies and Vera Drake." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Leigh’s improvisational skills — actually the actors improvise while he prods, listens, selects, edits — have created a piece that is consistently absorbing and remarkably topical...almost all the time this is quality Leigh: amusing, touching, wise." Presse : MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "fine revival..What Friel offers us is a humane analysis of the flawed Irish temper and its propensity for romance." NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "unsatisfying....wilting production." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "If anyone is writing richer plays than Friel, I don’t know him, or her...Friel is the bard of loss, the poet of dislocation, and Aristocrats is a fine elegy to a disappearing world, well worth its revival at the National." PETER HEPPLE for THE STAGE says, "Andrew Scott...rather overshadows the rest of the low-key players, particularly his female siblings, Dervla Kirwan as alcoholic Alice and Gina McKee.." CHARLES SPENCER for DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Too much clotted exposition, too little living drama.....Friel is a paradoxical writer. At his greatest, he soars into the sublime. But when less than inspired, as he mostly is here, he seems like a conscientious, earthbound plodder." PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "The production skilfully sustains the play's meditative, tragicomic mood. ...there is something genuinely Chekhovian in the mix of objectivity and compassion with which Friel views this dying breed...a richly ambivalent play."

Commentaire : This was Nicholas Hytner’s first show as the new artistic director of the Royal National Theatre, and it seemed to herald a new era, very different from Trevor Nunn’s series of American musicals’ “golden oldies”.
It had been rewritten and enlarged from earlier “fringe” versions at the Edinburgh Festival and the BAC, and proved to be hugely controversial. The clash of high operatic music and big choral parodies with scatological lyrics about whores, crack, and junkies made some critics compare it to a modern day “Beggar’s Opera”. A nearly naked Jesus admitting to being “a bit gay”, a plump glam-rock God descending on a golden swing singing “It Ain’t Easy Being Me”, and Jesus and Satan performing a baroque duet caused some critics to scream blasphemy. Adam and Eve and the Holy Virgin appearing as guest artists on the Jerry Springer TV chat-show made some critics respond enthusiastically to the satire on the cheap values of modern society. The show won four Olivier Awards including Best Musical.
Presse : NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "It's vulgar, salacious but such a pleasure."
MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "But the supreme merit of Lee's Lyttelton production is that it is superbly sung."
BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, " If ever a show seems destined for cult status, this is it."

He goes on to say, "There isn’t a weak or ill-considered performance on view." JASON BEST for THE STAGE says, "Clear, supple and idiomatic." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "Any production relies on the casting of the sisters; and here the prize performance is from Kristin Scott Thomas." DAVID BENEDICT for THE INDEPENDENT says, “The only shocking thing about the evening is how splendidly enjoyable it is.”
NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, “Mother Clap’s Molly House is a daring, impassioned lament for decadent gay lives, but becomes too captivated by the gay high-jinks it presents and condemns.”
JOHN PETER for THE SUNDAY TIMES says, "Ravenhill's writing is tough, eloquent, sardonic.."
SHRIDAN MORLEY for TELETEXT says, "It becomes increasingly clear that Ravenhill is not just a sensationalist. Mother Clap is an ambitious tragicomedy of sex and seduction..."
PETER HEPPLE for THE STAGE says, "Though the second half is not as strong as the first .... the societal strictures and economic forces that lie at the heart of Ravenhill's work are strongly defined, the deliberately shocking scenes being softened by humour with a fine young company on top form."

THE GUARDIAN says, "..the laughs arrive in escalating waves and the cast perform with such hectic virtuosity…" CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRATH says, "Noises Off has now achieved classic status." Presse : TIME OUT says, "It's been a long wait but is was worth it....Simon Russell Beale's portly appearance turns out to make an already very human Hamlet even more so." THE EVENING STANDARD was also impressed saying, "Hamlet will never be quite the same again. Simon Russell Beale caused one of the great Shakespearian sensations of our time last night, when he took on the Prince and won. " THE INDEPENDENT says, "Beale finally embraced his destiny on the Lyttelton stage...and it's a relief to report that his performance is well worth the wait. But goes on to say, "A wonderful Hamlet is constrained by a sentimentalised conception of the play." THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "There is an intelligence, humanity, humour and depth of feeling in this performance that I have never seen bettered." However, not all the critics thought Beale was great , THE DAILY EXPRESS says, "Russell Beale is a brilliant ironist, ferociously clever and funny. But for some reason he never lets rip; the pathos is there but not the poetry. In fact there's not really a single thrill in this long-gown production which despite radical cuts frequently looks like the work of the local drama society." THE STAGE headlined, "Deeply human, lacking pathos."

143) House
Type : Original
Joué durant 1 mois 3 semaines
Nombre de représentations : 46

Commentaire : HOUSE and GARDEN (1999)
two linked plays by Alan Avckbourn
The London premieres of two new connected Alan Ayckbourn plays which are performed in the olivier and Lyttelton simultaneously. The same actors appear in both productions, one of which is set in the interior of a house while the other is set outside. However, the plays can be seen as individual comedies!
Presse : THE INDEPENDENT says, "You don't need to be the fortune-teller at the climactic fete to predict that the National have a nice, safe middlebrow summer hit." THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, " Some of his (Alan Ayckbourn) finest, and deepest comedy." ROBERT GORE-LANGTON for THE DAILY EXPRESS says, "The Weakness of this production is that it's so unbalanced. House is a vintage comedy while Garden is anything but....Still, taken together this is an undeniably larky summer event." THE GUARDIAN says, "It is not just a triumph of theatrical logistics: Ayckbourn has important things to say about the moral mayhem of life." THE TIMES says, "The Ingenuity is even greater than in his tripartite Norman Conquests 30 years ago." NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD gave the show a luke-warm response saying, "Once exposed to the comedic pleasures of House and Garden, you see there's much less to the spectacular novelties than first meets the interested eye." JOHN PETER for THE SUNDAY TIMES says, "Haig gives one of the best performances of his career" He goes on to say, "Of the two plays, Garden is the weaker....Garden is noticeably more incomplete: things happen for no apparent reason, as if some necessary explanation had been withheld." PETER HEPPLE for THE STAGE says, As they share the same plot, it is not strictly necessary to see both, though the rewards are greater, in other words the second play is all the better for having seen the first." JANE EDWARDES for TIME OUT says, "If you were only to see one play, enter the 'House' alone; if you were to see both, visit the 'Garden' first."

Presse : JOHN PETER of THE SUNDAY TIMES says, " Remember This? Please! I would give anything to forget this. Stephen Poliakoff's play is one of the worst new works ever staged by the National Theatre." NICHOLAS DE JONGH of THE EVENING STANDARD says, " Remember This strikes me as a dull, labouring trawl through the hinterland of Poliakoff's imagination, a journey without much fun on the way." KATE BASSETT for the DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Staggeringly substandard new play … chronically dull piece of theatre." THE GUARDIAN says, " There are lots of incidental pleasures: one just wishes Poliakoff had found a plot to support his thesis that we are in grave danger of losing our collective memory." THE INPEPENDANT says "…..failing to work on any level: philosophical, psychological or dramatic..." DOMINIC CAVENDISH of TIME OUT says, " It's hard to know which members of the cast to feel sorry for most…" At least I found one critic who was not too hard on the play. IAN SHUTTLEWORTH for the FINANTIAL TIMES says, "It is a potentially fine yarn, performed with brio by Ron Daniels's company but, in Poliakoff's script, clunking quite a bit as it goes."

Presse : THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Look forward in pleasure as Osborne's angry hero is redeemed." DOMINIC CAVENDISH of TIME OUT says, "Michael Sheen gives us a Jimmy Porter who is fearsomely alive.." The headline in THE TIMES by BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE says, "Portrait in the attic is still a treasure." THE DAILY EXPRESS says, "The great achievement of Gregory Hersov's production is that it shows us Osborne's fabulous rant is still very much a going concern." THE DAILY MAIL says, "Sheen is simply exhilarating." THE FINANCIAL TIMES says, "In the theatre - certainly at the National Theatre, where it is now excellently revived - you see simply how brilliantly Osborne knew how to write a play." THE GUARDIAN says, "It is a good play precisely because Jimmy and Alison are well-matched opponents in the endless class war." THE INDEPENDENT says, "All in all, this perfectly paced production is nothing short of a revelation." However, David Blewitt of THE STAGE says, "It has become a period piece". And goes on to say, "The feel of the time is missing."

Presse : SHERIDAN MORLEY describes the play as a "loving revival". JOHN THAXTER of THE STAGE says the show is "set to be a hit", but goes on to say "this production is not one for Coward purists". NICHOLAS DE JONGH of THE EVENING STANDARD says the show is "Miscast" and goes on to say, "This handsome comedy of manners is left scarred and sagging." CHARLES GODFREY-FAUSETT of TIME OUT describes the play as "Stirring" and "Gutsy".JOHN PETER of THE SUNDAY TIMES says, "This is a first-rate production, observant, precisely paced, and irresistibly and liberatingly funny." THE DAILY EXPRESS says, "There's genuine moral depravity on display here - when you stop chuckling long enough to think about it, that is." THE DAILY MAIL says, "Noel Coward's perfectly constructed comedy has been given a thorough but only intermittently funny revival in the Lyttelton."

Metteur en scène : Anthony Page
Avec : Michael Feast, Julie Legrand, Niamh Linehan, Royce Mills, Frances De La Tour , Michael Williams, David Bark-jones, Windsor Davis, Peter Gowen, Frank Windsor
Presse : THE EVENING STANDARD said "A glorious swoop of vintage comedy. " THE TIMES says "De la Tour plays Raisa with such wit and force, combining calculation, coquettishness and iciness of spirit, that you find yourself laughing at her, wincing from her, yet believing her horribly real." THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says "Anthony Page's Lyttelton production is ludicriously leisurely for a light entertainment... What saves the evening is the liveliness of Ayckbourn's translation and the excellence of the leading performances. " THE GUARDIAN says, " Ostrovsky's marvellous work has the exuberant madness of the best Russian comedy." THE INDEPENDENT says, "Francis De La Tour is on top form." JANE EDWARDES of TIME OUT says " Anthony Page's scrupulous production never goes so far over the top that it loses touch with the grim existence of those who are dependent on the kindness of others." PETER HEPPLE of THE STAGE says, "This is a play that one feels might have been funnier and sharper." The show received a bad review from THE FINANCIAL TIMES, which by the way I totally disagree with, saying, "None of the performances is quite good enough... "

Presse : BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE, of THE TIMES says, "I don't think there is a line that does not express pain, regret, anger, alarm, desire, remorse or some blend of those emotions. Can you name a play that says so little and implies so much? No, I thought not." CHARLES SPENCER of THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says "An enthralling production of an indisputably great play." JOHN PETER of THE SUNDAY TIMES says "Pinter's haunting play, and this superlative production, are painful because you know that there is no clear or easy answer. Great writing does not betray." However, ALAISTER MACAULAY of THE FINANCIAL TIMES was a little disappointed saying "The chemistry between the three characters does not ring true here, because the three actors appear to inhabit markedly different social circles." PAUL TAYLOR of THE INDEPENDENT is not too impressed either describing the play as a " Mildly disappointing production." JANE EDWARDES of THE TIMES describes the play as a "Hit and miss production."

Presse : ROBERT HANKS of THE FINANCIAL TIMES says, "This is a marvellously enjoyable, well-acted play, and one that speaks directly to the naughty schoolboy that lurks in all of us." CHARLES SPENCER of THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "It's a lovely piece, affectionate, richly funny and hugely touching." DOMINIC CAVENDISH of THE INDEPENDENT says, "Adam Godley captures the whinnying exuberance and nasal hauteur of Williams perfectly." NICHOLAS DE JONGH of EVENING STANDARD says, "I worry that the National's financial pressures may be driving Trevor Nunn to give house-room to pleasurable though trivial frivolities like this." PETER HEPPLE of THE STAGE says, "The only character who seems truly real is Barbara Windsor, played as a genuine innocent by Samantha Spiro, whose likeness to the original is uncanny."

Presse : NICHOLAS DE JONGH of THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Fiona's prime Miss Brodie shows there's still a spark" and goes on to say it is an "ingeniously staged production" which is "powered both by nostalgia and thoroughly modern technology". PETER HEPPLE of THE STAGE says "Shaw brings a lot of her own distinctive personality to the role of Jean Brodie, giving her a surprisingly sexy air…" BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE of THE TIMES said "Maybe Shaw could do more to bring out the baffled grief of the broken Brodie, but her emphasis surely serves the play well."

ROBERT BUTLER of THE INDEPENDENT says 'Dench is on superb form as a brisk, bustling figure', although like me he too struggled to totally understand what the play was trying to say , he writes 'Amy’s View, which articulates more than it dramatises, left me unsure what was being said.'. BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE of THE TIMES is very enthusiastic about the play, saying 'Again and again Richard Eyre's finely honed production wins your respect for Hare's wit and craft.' and goes on to say 'A major dramatist has written a strong, rich play, and a major actress has done him proud.'

Avec : Maria Friedman (Liza Elliott), Paul Shelley (Kendall Nesbitt), Adrian Dunbar (Charley Johnson), Steven Edward Moore (Randy Curtis), James Dreyfus (Russell Paxton), Hugh Ross (Dr. Brooks), Ashleigh Sendin (Miss Foster), Summer Rognlie (Alison Dubois), Charlotte Cornwall
Commentaire : This was the first collaboration of Ira Gershwin following the death of his brother, and ran for 467 performances in New York in 1941. The leading role was played by Gertrude Lawrence, and the show made a star of newcomer Danny Kaye in the role of a camp photographer with a show-stopping patter number “Tchaikowsky”.
The musical is so constructed that all the numbers are sung during the dream sequences that Liza describes to her doctor. The only exception is the song “My Ship” which serves a special part of the plot: it is a half-remembered song from Liza’s childhood and because Charley is the only man who can complete the song for her, he wins Liza’s love.
55 years after its Broadway debut, this was its first London production, though it did have a production at Nottingham in 1981 with Celeste Holm. The critics found it fascinating and important, but felt it suffered by comparison with “Guys & Dolls” which was currently the opposition under the same National Theatre roof
Presse : "...Surprisingly, Maria Friedman turns out to be far better at playing Liza, the cool and often collected editress of Allure Magazine – with her talent for cut and thrust - than as the suffering girl on the verge of a nervous breakdown... Miss Friedman in in sweet voice and artfully holds the balance between drama and music, which Lady in the Dark so cleverly celebrates. It is a rousing occasion." Nicholas de Jongh, The London Evening Standard (12 March 1997)
"...[The Lady in the Dark's] saving grace is Weill's score, which allies the emotional plangency of Berlin period to Broadway idioms...The other good reason for seeing the show, as with Sondheim's Passion, is Maria Friedman's stellar performance. She actually persuades you that inside the professionally masterful but emotionally dithering Liza lurks a badly bruised spirit. She sings the big numbers with a direct lyric simplicity and she allows her Guiletta Massina-like clown instinct to emerge in a circus sequence where she cavorts with the pawkiness of a wild-eyed child. The evening belongs unequivocally to her..." Michael Billington, The Guardian (12 March 1997)
"...By all accounts Gertrude Lawrence was magic as the fashion-mag editor...Maria Friedman, who is fronting what the National claims is the musical's belated British premiere, is not quite so charismatic, but once again she proves herself splendidly versatile, resourceful performer... The supporting cast is fine and Friedman more than fine. When she exits from a big-top fantasy episode to launch first into Weill's celebration of vamps, The Saga of Jenny, and then into his splendedly robust love song. My Ship - well, she had the first-night audience wishing the palm of her hand was larger, so we could spend more time in it." Benedict Nightingale, The Times (12 March 1997)
"...The woman having the crack-up is Liza Elliot, the hotshot editor of a leading fashion magazine. In this role, Maria Friedman is badly miscast. She's too sweet, concessive-looking and breathy to project the drive, authority and magnetism that have got this business-suited woman to the top. It's true that in Sondheim's Passion, Friedman conveyed power, but it was the potency of an implacably loving masochism. Here you need a stronger sense of the enamelled armour Liza has built around herself. For if the charcter in Passion was straightforwardly ugly, in Lady in the Dark, the heroine is found to be compensating for the fact that she was thought unattractive to her parents as a child. It's a discovery that allows the show to employ psychoanalysis to endorse traditional roles. Liza's success has nothing to do with trying to compete on equal terms with men, we deduce from the shrink, rather it's the refusal to risk being hurt by competeting with other women. So of the three complete ciphers who want to marry her, she ends up choosing the one who also wants her job..." Paul Taylor, The Independent (13 March 1997)
"...Despite an excellent cast, Lady in the Dark seems like an exercise in theatrical archaeology... The show isn't helped by the fact that Freudian psychoanalysis, for which Lady in the Dark often seems one long advertisement, is increasingly discredited... What scuppers Lady in the Dark, though, is the ;ack of warmth and audience involvement. Maria Friedman is one of our finest musical-theatre talents, but, although she communicated moments of mental distress as Liza, she never comes close to moving you..." Charles Spencer, The Daily Telegraph (13 March 1997)

With its nine-piece orchestra and staged in the small Cottesloe studio theatre, prior to opening this was mocked as “Teeny Todd, the cut-down version of Sweeney”. However, it was received with almost unanimous praise in every respect, and hailed as a masterpiece in construction, design and performance.

Commentaire : Il s'agit du dernier spectaclecréé par le National Theatre à l'Old Vic. Cette pièce a été rejetée. A la première, le 24 février 1976, lors des saluts, la troupe s'est fait huer et des gens criaient : "Money back! Money back!".
